Weekly Photography Challenge, Week 11

March 16th 2011 16:01
Hey Everyone! This is the 11th week of Shutterboo's 52 week photography challenge, and the theme was CURVES.

If you missed the previous weeks, check them out by scrolling down the page.

And if you want to join or look at the other amazing photos taken this week, check out the Flickr group here.

This week's theme was CURVES. Curves, Curves everywhere. So many curves that I think I got overwhelmed. It's kind of been my thing these past few weeks to be overwhelmed. My job is crazy right now. All the more reason to pick up my camera and get out...

But, I'm pretty disappointed with my submission. Not that I don't like it; I just wish was able to do something more out-of-the-box then what I've been doing lately. Plus I have an urge to do portraits, yet I have a serious lack of model-wannabes.

Okay, here’s my submitted photo:

I stopped by my local park, San Lee Park, during my lunch hour this week. I was hoping to find some curvy paths, some curvy banks of the pond, etc. I did, but nothing that really wowed me. While I was walking around I spotted this tree stump, and I really liked the colors (browns & greens) and the pattern of it. So I snapped a few photos. Later, I cropped it and enhanced the colors a bit in order to make it more visually appealing to my eye. This is what I ended up with. I like it, but the color combination is so similar to my last week's submission that it kind of bums me out.

Here's a few more shots of CURVES I found at the park:

The first is a curvy path uphill. It's one of the many ideas that came to mind when I first saw this week's theme, but that made it too common for me to submit. I like how there's also a curvy sign in the frame, but the still-winter-trees made it a NO.

The second is a yellow chain link fence that blocked the curvy path. I liked the vibrancy of the yellow and the DOF, but didn't really wow me much.

On my way back to work, I took the long way in hopes of finding something else to shoot, and I came upon a curve in the railroad track:

It's an okay shot I guess. The curve wasn't as prominent as I wanted and the colors lacked for me, which is why I went with a richened sepia.

Prior to my trip to the park, I had headed over to a vacant school in my neighborhood. They have these tires half buried in the ground that I thought would be a good subject, but again... I just didn't love the outcome.

And while I was there I spotted a brick cobblestone path that I thought was interesting, but didn't quite fit my idea of the theme.

All week I wanted to go and shoot some horses, because I like the curves of their bodies and thought it would be a unique take on the theme. I got a few good shots, but nothing that screamed the theme.

Next week's theme is PAST and I'm already thinking of the abandon houses I've haven't shot yet... but am I pigeon-holing... let's see if I can come up with something else.

MY FAVs from the Flickr Group this week:

BeckiD987 - Spring Curves - It's a picture of these vibrant green flowers curving and budding from a branch. It's really quite pretty, and is only enhanced by the gorgeous bokeh affect in the background.

Natasha Joyan - Inside the Drops/Curves - it's a macro shot of water droplets on a vibrant pink flower that you can see in the larger water droplets. I have a thing for vibrant colors. Plus this is the kind of photo that I want to attempt some day.

klubbers - Artitecture Curves - it's a picture of the Frank Gehry/Peter B. Lewis Building in Cleveland, OH. It's basically the perfect fit for this week's theme in building form. It has tons of curves, and he put it in black and white which I love.

Honorable Mentions - 3dogmom29's Curvy Tree (I like the unique curve of the tree and the light shining in), larkin2285's Criel Mound Curves (a curvy staircase to seemingly nowhere by the top), and Whitnickle's Curvy Ribbon Candy (I like her smart use of orange and blue together)
