Weekly Photo Challenge, Week 9

March 2nd 2011 19:50
Hey Everyone! This is the 9th week of Shutterboo's 52 week photography challenge, and the theme was LARGE.

If you missed the previous weeks, check them out (ELECTRICITY, JOY, CONTROL, COLORFUL, SIGN, REPETITION, FEAR and WHITE) here.

And if you want to join or look at the other amazing photos taken this week, check out the Flickr group here.

This week's theme was LARGE. I couldn't get over the literal interpretation of the theme as I scouted things that were physically LARGE. Then it became, well how can I capture the theme in a photo without some sort of size/scale comparison?

For instance, I thought about taking a photo of my large dog. He's nearly 100 pounds and is often referenced as a horse by our neighbor's children. But, when standing alone, or with an adult, he just doesn't appear all that large. Plus he's a big scared-cat and hates having his picture taken. Pair that with his fear of said neighbor's children... I just couldn't imagine trying to make that photo-shoot work.

Then I thought about doing something with something small and making it look large with perspective and angling and all that jazz, but I got lazy and ended up not trying that.

But, luckily for me the weather was really nice here in NC the past weekend and the hubby, the dog and myself headed to the closest NC State Park, Raven Rock which happens to have a LARGE rock/cliff and some amazingly LARGE trees.

So here are 3 of my favorites from our little excursion:

This was on a hill to begin with, but I got down on the ground and shot it up to get the perspective I wanted and really show off the amazing root system of these trees. I did some post-editing work to make the roots stand out from the ground and I think it looked best in B&W.

I thought this was a great subject; it's a tree that lines the "Raven Rock Trail" and the only one that has carving scars all over it. Again, I did some post-editing work to try and bring out the carvings a bit more, but I wish I spent more time shooting it...

Again, it's black and white because I thought it brought out more of the details in the rock (plus everythings so gray & brown right now), but I liked this one pariticularly because you get some frame of reference with my hubby and dog in the shot at the base of the LARGE rock/cliff.

I wasn't convinced I had my shot for the week, so I wanted to take another adventure out. I was planning to visit another historical site in my neighborhood of a LARGE civil-war era (Endor) Iron Furnance (35 feet high by 32 feet wide at the base), but I got creeped out about halfway down the abandoned and restricted trail by myself and turned back. So instead I plopped myself in the middle of town and took a few pictures at the Train Museum.

Here's my favorite from there:

Again, I did some post-editing and went with Sepia to make it feel more old-fashioned. I like this one alot, but I'm kind of bummed that you can tell it's a display train with the gravel, the stairs and the building in the background.

Over at the Flickr Group... There were so many great ideas, much more creative with the theme than my literal take... Here are my FAVORITES!

Two and Lu - Large Red Chair, Small Horse - It's a large red chair statue, with a horse statute standing atop it in front of a building. Such a random, bold, unique subject, I couldn't resist featuring it here.

CarsonHBM - Enron Building in Houston, TX - It's looking up on the glass/mirrored skyscraper with it's great reflection of lesser skyscrapers and the light bounces off the windows beautifully.

MegMR - Daddy vs. Baby Feet - It's just a couple of feet, but boy is super adorable. Large "Daddy" feet, paired with tiny baby feet in sepia.

Honorable Mentions - beepbeepsean's Big Rock, slapshots' Shark Teeth and klubbers' Large Coins

Here's an extra for you, FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING (I can't wait until you're here!)

Next week's theme... MESS, til then folks!
