Weekly Photo Challenge, Week 5
February 2nd 2011 15:41
Hey Everyone! This is the 5th week of Shutterboo's 52 week photography challenge, and the theme was SIGN.
If you missed the previous weeks, check them out (ELECTRICITY, JOY, CONTROL, COLORFUL) here.
And if you want to join or look at the other amazing photos taken this week, check out the Flickr group here.
So this week's theme was SIGN, and I had a few immediate ideas, some I got to and some I didn't. One of the signs that came to mind right away was this one...
Moonshine Lane, Sanford, NC. It's a sign I pass everyday to and from work. I moved from NY to NC a few years back, and remember seeing this sign a boldly proclaiming (in true Wizard of Oz fashion) "Toto, I've a feeling we're not inKansas New York any more" (Toto was my husband).
This sign makes me smile now everytime I see it. Maybe because it seems like such a Southern cliche: Moonshine Lane is a dirt road next to a cattle farm in rural NC, but that it's completely legitimate.
I chose this photo because the sign is in clear view, it follows the 'rule of thirds' (which I've been trying to be more mindful of) and the sun isn't the main focus (which I tend to do) but plays a great supporting role with the lighting on the sign. I made it black and white, because I thought it had more impact that way (the grass isn't so green in NC during the winter).
I shot this sign from a lot of different angles, and had a runner-up photo. This one has the dirt road visible in the background, but I thought the light on the sign was to reflective.
Another thing that caught my attention when I moved south is the abundance of abandoned houses and old barn structures falling to pieces that are usually covered in warning signs. When I was out on my photo journey, I thought this photo would be the one submitted, but once I got it back home, post-processing left something to be desired.
There was one SIGN I wanted to capture but couldn't find the right subject. You know, those funny church signs? They're usually all over the place in my tiny town, but for some reason they were sporting much more classic/reserved verses this weekend when I went out on my photo excursion. In case you're not sure what I'm talking about, you can check out an example by Paul Nicholson.
I also thought about doing some sign langauge, but every shot I came up with didn't quite work, so I scraped it. I also thought of a song, Ace of Base's "I Saw the Sign", but all ideas for that were dead ends.
My favorites from this week's theme were:
Kourtneypaige - Universal Sign - She took a picture of a young girl doing sign langauge of the phrase "I love you." The photo is so adorable, and most because the model is just that, but also because of the tight framing and the light and soft tones/colors of the photo.
PagX - Big Top Sign - She took a night photo of a neon sign atop a circus tent and although she wasn't as happy with the photo (her blog), I really dug it. I love how she framed it, and how she captured the light/reflection on the stripes of the tent. I thought it was really well done.
MegMR - Railroad Crossing Sign - She did a streetscape with a railroad crossing sign in the foreground, but the reason it's one of my favorites is because there's many more signs than just that one. There's a stop sign, a no left turn sign, a street sign, shop signs, etc. all in the background. Plus I love the post-processing color she's did; it really made the photo striking.
Honorable Mentions: Whitnickle's No Sales to the Public and photosdejr Welcome Home Sign
Next week's theme is REPETITION... hmmm. Comments always welcome!
