Weekly Photo Challange, Week 10
March 9th 2011 17:45
Hey Everyone! This is the 9th week of Shutterboo's 52 week photography challenge, and the theme was MESS.
If you missed the previous weeks, check them out (ELECTRICITY, JOY, CONTROL, COLORFUL, SIGN, REPETITION, FEAR, WHITE and LARGE) here.
And if you want to join or look at the other amazing photos taken this week, check out the Flickr group here.
This week's theme was MESS and I cringed in horror. Not because I couldn't find several messes all around me (because there were plenty), but because I like to photograph "pretty" things and so how was I going to find a "pretty" mess.
Each week I think that the last week was the hardest until the next week's theme is announced. That's the point of a challenge though, right? And I sure as heck wouldn't have been out searching for "pretty messes" without it. So I'm glad to be pushing myself alongside some very friendly people and getting some great feedback from my friends and family. I can't believe the 10th week of the year is over with already.
Alright, I tried a couple different things this week, here's my favorite and the submitted photo:
I really love the old, abandoned houses, sheds, barns that have been left to completely fall apart here in the South. Up North, if you see an abandoned building, it doesn't usually last long before it's being renovated or torn down completely, but here they can last sometimes longer than they did in their prime.
This is a house, that again, is along my way to work. I stopped off in the late afternoon on Monday. I actually was going to shoot pictures of the abandoned house next door that I can see through the trees from the road. But that was until I saw the green/mossy paint/mold of this one. I didn't even realize it was there. It has some great wooden framed windows and so I shot through one to reveal the rooms inside now empty with a leaf-scattered floor. A MESS of what was once a home.
Here's another shot of this old house with the sun shining down on it. As you can see it no longer has a roof and that open space used to hold the front door. I think the color is a bit odd with this one, I might go back and try to edit it again, but I think it tells a story as well:
On a completely different note, I was thinking MESS as in cooking/eating etc. My hubby's mom used to call him "Messy Marvin" and so I thought of catching him while/after he ate something extremely messy... he did NOT want any part of that though... :/
So I thought of the MESSIEST thing I cook/bake - BREAD - The flour gets everywhere, you're hands are doughy and then slab some butter or jelly on it when it comes out of the oven... yummmmmmmmmm. So I took mostly candid self-portraits (if there is such a thing!) throughout the process. then I compiled them and went sepia (so the colors were consistent). You can check out my recipe here.
While I was waiting for my bread to rise and bake, I decided I would try something I saw during my MESS Flickr search... a Cookie Splash...
It's a picture of a drink container and a cookie at the moment you dropped something in the liquid to capture the large splash. After several attempts, this was my best shot:
You can see the splash and the mess, but it's not focusing on the actual splash like so many examples that I've seen. After some research I realized I probably need to have a faster shutter speed and I'll definitely have a more uncluttered backdrop, so eventually I'll get around to trying this again...
That's basically it for my shots of MESS. I was able to take more SPRING shots and had an excursion with my Dad and Hubby, fishing the intercoastal waters of NC/SC, so if I have time I'll post them in another post.
There were some great shot of MESS from the Flickr group... Here are my favorites!
Hasselbach Photography - Rhodesian Army Plaques - He might call in a mess, but it looks like a treasure to me. The dirty, rusty plaques were able to survive years in a suitcase in a garage. The positioning, framing, colors, textures, etc. of this photo is simply amazing.
Whitnickle - Mess Finger Paint - It's a little girl with paint in globs on her hands, face, tummy and even legs! The picture is focused on her outstretched paint covered hand, which I thought added to the fun of the shot.
slapshots - Mess - It's a picture of his dog on a bed, lounged out in utter satisfaction with a bunch of tissues. He actually shot a bunch, and I pretty much love them all. The dog must have been shocked and elated to have been allowed to make such a mess
Honorable Mentions - Rattyree's Sewing Mess and Victoria Riddle's Lunch Mess
Next week's theme... CURVES.
