Photography Blur - Challenge, Week 1
January 4th 2011 23:16
Quick recap. I got a fancy new camera last year and a bunch of family and friends saying I should explore this whole photography thing more... So I decided to find something to help push myself into taking more photos and ones that were more eclectic and out-of-the-box for me. And I found Shutterboo and then I joined Flickr. Now, I'm pretty much obsessed.
This was the first week of the 52 week challenge, and the theme was ELECTRICITY.
Here's the photo I submitted to the group (more on why later):
But it took me a long way to get there, let me explain:
The first thing I thought was "Oh, no! What am I going to do for electricity!?"
The second thing I thought was "Oh, wouldn't it be cool if I could capture a lightning bolt!" and then I realized, I don't have the slighest clue how to even attempt to catpure that. "Do you just wait for thunder, point the camera in that direct and continuously shoot until the bolt appears?" And then lastly I realized that it's January and the odds of a thunder/lightning storm are slim to none in North Carolina. So that idea was scraped.
After that, I went out for a round of golf with my parents. Mind you, I don't golf, but was there to take some pictures of the course and whatever caught my eye. And then I thought, "I could take a picture of a golf cart, they're electric!" Here's the shot.
Although I like the shot, it didn't scream the theme to me. I had a few other ideas at the course, but they all fell flat.
So I started to rack my brain. And came up with a few other ideas.
Power lines. Particularly for the lines and repetition it could lend a photo. I also tried to up the ante by trying to get a great sky background at sunset, but the skies didn't cooperate as well as I had hoped. Here are a couple of what I got.
Then I thought, "What if I went all, Benjamin Franklin?! You know, got a kite and a key and held it in some field!" But then I realized I don't have a kite and it's one of those things you'll be hard-pressed to find in a store in January. So that idea was scraped.
So then I decided the best way for me to capture electricity would be in my home, with everyday things and try and create unusual lighting and angles to provide interest. I took pictures of my lamps and lights, a moving ceiling fan, electrical outlets, even switches.
As soon as I took the photo I submitted I liked it right away.
I thought the point of view angle was interesting: looking up the base of a table lamp as well as how the shade provide more angles/lines, especially with the tight frame.
I liked the lighting - the bulb was bright and obvious, but more so I liked the light/dark of the base, and the dull glow of the shade.
So that's my story for this week's theme. What did you think of my photos?! Should I have picked another!? Or could have improved my submitted shot?! Leave it in the comments if you'd like.
Along with sharing my journey every week, I'm also going to pick my three favorites from the Shutterboo's Flickr Group.
1. 'shoutabyss' Electricity. (I'm not sure if you'll be able to see the photo, since he marked it private) but here's the link. It's a shot, looking up a telephone/power line poll. The wood pole has amazing lines that draw your eye up and power lines are criss-crossing across the top of the frame, all on a bright blue lightly clouded background. It really stands out.
2. 'Alli77' electricity lil' robot, here's the link. It's a little robot clock, engulfed in christmas lights. The focus is right on the little shiny guy, which is awesome, and the use of christmas lights was a great idea. Such a fun shot.
3. 'violetlmk' Electricity, here's the link. She was able capture what I couldn't, using the repetition of the towers and the power lines with a great sky backdrop. Plus the blues, violets, yellows and oranges are beautiful.
